HISTORY

Burning Spear was founded in 1993 by three student leaders, Ms. Liza Park, Mr. Benjamin Crump, and Mr. Brecht Heuchan. They united to support Florida State University football quarterback Charlie Ward in pursuing the Heisman Trophy. By doing so, the award-winning campaign was born, and the university was forever changed. Now in its fourth decade, the organization boasts more than 400 members.

Dedicated to building legacy and tradition, Burning Spear hosts the Clock & Seal Leadership Banquet, which recognizes esteemed Florida State University graduates, administration, staff, student leaders, and organizations. Other Burning Spear activities include the Spirit Drum, the Guardian of the Flame Awards Ceremony, and numerous campaigns to support the university. The dedication to reinforcing Florida State University's position as a top public university has created recognizable traditions to engage the university community in celebrating the university's accomplishments, laying the foundation for the future.
